At El Tejido the main variety is Cacao is Criollo, which is what the ancient Maya/Aztec civilizations used in ceremony. They referred to it as “xocolatl,” meaning “bitter water.”

Although other strains like Forastero & Trinitario, are still popular for its slight difference & uniqueness in color, taste and smell. But mainly because of its commercial growing abilities.

Medicinal Value

Kakao contains more than 1,200 active ingredients, and 10% of its dry weight is antioxidants. It’s also said that Kakao has more antioxidants than blueberry, goji berry, açai berry, red wine and pomegranate combined.

Cacao is also a rich source of magnesium, iron, chromium, sulfur, copper and zinc.

Probably the most unique properties of kakao have to do with sertonin and brain functions and feelings of well-being.

Cacao activates the parasympathetic nervous system whereas coffee activates the sympathetic system.

The parasympathetic system is responsible for relaxation, calmness, and ease, love.

The Sympathetic nervous system is the fight or flight system that tells your body to clench, to become tight because were under attack

Cacao has Thebromine & Coffee has caffeine, they are similar but behave very differently. Both are vasdialarors which which stimulates blood flow brings more blood to the lungs and heart.

Although coffee is more aggressive, & Cacao is respondent to either bring us energy or relax us.

Tryptophan is found in Cacao & is an amino acid only synthesized from diet, it is precursor to serotonin, which mean it produces & balances hormones naturally, & with the high amounts of magnesium it produces a lightness in the brain.

Tryptophan correlates with the central nervous system so it produces the feeling of feeling relaxed while increasing energy, even an increased focus & clarity, as well as boost feelings of well-being, connection and safety, and has shown to be effective within depression.

History of Cacao

Cacao is the raw original form of ‘Chocolate’ the Aztecs spelled it “xocoltal” the Olmecs spelled it “Kakaw” Tolomecs may have changed it to “Koko.” And now the the Spanish coined it as Choco=Hot, Ha=Water, so ChocoHa is Hot Cacao Tea. But here we spell it “Kakao.”

Seeds from Guatemaya have been found to be millions of yrs old, the olmecs even before the Maya’s were coming to harvest the sacred kakao tree.

Kakao has been proven to work with agitation & stress, reduce asthma, improve emaciation, give energy boosts, reduce fever, clean the teeth, increase fertility and sexual appetite, prevent cancer, & reduce bronchitis, & abdominal pain. A cacao poultice or salve was used to soothe burns & disinfect cuts, & leaves from the cacao tree were used as antiseptics for wounds. As well as slow the effects of aging, and even improve exercise recovery & muscle damage in elite athletes.

The boca Costa /southern coast where there was a Perfect climate which had a lot of moisture the nutrients of the volcanoes. Where it’s speculated Cacao first sprouted, but actually it’s origins aren’t all the way known bcuz in order for the tree to reproduce It needs to be planted within 10 days of being harvested.

Also the Cacao trees were usually found near cenotes, that had a perfect moist micro climate that also provided shade.

Creation Story

Many Creation stories exist of about mama Cacao, here is one..

“Hun Hunahpu and his twin brother were tricked into losing a ball game and killed by the Lords of Xibalbá, the Maya Underworld. Hun Hunahpu’s head was hung up on what is depicted as a cacao tree. When he spit into the hand of the princess Ixkik’, she conceived two Hero Twins Hunahpú and Xbalanqué.

These twins eventually become skilled ball players and challenge the Lords of Xibalbá to a game in order to bring their father back to life. The Lords agreed to the game only if the twins successfully complete a set of dangerous trials in the Underworld.

Through their skill and cunning, they are able to complete the trials, defeat the Lords, and resurrect their father as the Maize God. Having finished this task, they then climb up into the sky to become the sun and moon.” (“Creation Story of the Maya”).
